Every motorcycle driven on public roads in the UK is legally required to have some form of insurance. The minimum legal insurance requirement to ride a motorbike in the UK is Third Party Only, this insures against loss and injury to others. If you are the cause of an accident the insurer will pay your liability to other people involved in the accident. However, Third Party insurance does not cover you for any damage or loss to your own vehicle or belongings.
The next step up from Third Party insurance is Third Party, Fire and Theft (TPFT). TPFT not only covers your liability to others in the event of an accident but also covers your vehicle and belongings in the event that the bike is burnt or stolen.
The final motorcycle insurance option, and most expensive, is what's known as Fully Comprehensive. Fully Comprehensive bike insurance covers all the above as well as damage to your bike, passengers and belongings in the event of an accident caused by you.
